Welcome to King County
Where the people come to live like royals beneath the shadows of snowy mountaintops
This region along the Washington coast west of the breathtaking Cascade Mountain Range is home to a series of incredible urban centers, but these centers are divided by swathes of the gorgeous and heavily forested Washington wilderness. Green hills covered with dense tree lines keep the ground entirely invisible from a distance, and white mountaintops contrast beautifully with the region’s various crystal-blue lakes.
King County hosts a litany of fascinating stories to be told. From the stories held by the region’s first inhabitants, the Duwamish people, to the adventures and population growth of the Klondike gold rush, the journey that crafted King County into the idyllic destination it is today began centuries ago. Indigenous guides assisted the region’s first eastern explorers. On these expeditions, the county’s natural allure certainly didn’t go unnoticed as the Donation Land Claims Act of 1850 a few short decades later brought travelers from all around to the shadows beneath the Cascades. If you’re intrigued and would like to learn even more, the
Washington State History Museum is always open to the state’s many curious minds.
